Smashpad Review

Daniel Primed discusses Trash Panic

Antexit: This overlooked game reminds me of the Japanese imports for the PS1 I used to get and have the best time ever playing with my friends. So weird and fun and original. Trash Panic is an innovative blend of puzzle play, resource management and action. You have to love a game where half your games end with an action-movie slowmo shot of a roll of toilet paper or a sardine falling to the ground, like it was a cop who got shot on his last day before retirement. “NOOOOOO!!!!!!!”

Jeff Levine: The technical issues take me out of this game a bit, particularly the horrible civilian programming, weird behaviors and clipping. The city just doesn’t feel as alive as GTA IV, yet it’s not cartoony or as polished as Crackdown. It’s sort of stuck in a weird middle ground. Missions so far are okay, though occasionally so short as to be comically pointless (I’ve beat several missions in under fifteen seconds). Combat is fine; I enjoy the lightning powers, jumping from tall buildings and healing downed civilians. The storytelling, especially early on, was surprisingly clunky.

Metacritic

Antexit: I think the combat’s fine, but I feel like there should be some sort of a lock-on, even just for melee. I can’t understand why there isn’t, especially since every single bad guy in the game can hit you 95% of the time no matter what you’re doing unless you’re hitting the “evasive maneuver” button. The story is surprisingly terrible and poorly told. However it’s still lots of fun and really pushes my buttons. The grind where you beat an NPC unconscious and then heal them for the EXP is hilarious. I think the karma evens out for beating them and healing them, too. I did it for like an hour.

Zero Punctuation Review

Telephone thing: I like this game but it is buggy as shit.

Ste: It’s been a fun run, but I don’t think Infamous has any replay value. For me, GTA still rules the sandbox.

Polyphonic: Much better graphics, better overall presentation, online multiplayer. Otherwise it’s exactly the same as last year. I would get 2008 used instead of getting 2010.

Metacritic

Mordy: So expensive for a game with an expiration date!

Mr. Snrub: Seriously, fuck Madden football. And fuck the NFL and its exclusive contract with EA.

This guy is REAL pissed

Aarissi-a-roni: I took back my copy; it’s pretty horrible. The gameplay is basically identical to the last two versions except where they’ve broken it: the ball is constantly popping into the air when the QB gets hit; d-linemen intercept fumbles without ever seeing the ball; running backs get clobbered by five guys at once and still stay on their feet. I appreciate the effort to vary what happens on the field but the kind of thing I’m talking about should happen maybe once a season, not every other drive. The presentation is great except when it completely gets in the way of playing the game; after the first few times, the halftime show gets _real_ tired and there’s no way to turn it off.
