Jamescobo: Unequivocally the most embarrassing game for a girlfriend to catch you playing ever, but then again odds are most folks who would love this game aren’t going to have that problem anyway (/wrists). Also unequivocally the best pure beat-em-up since God Hand (and maybe even a little bit [is he gonna say it? is he gonna say it? oh shit he’s actually gonna say it!] better due to the refined presentation). Plus, how often do you come across a game where even the LOADING SCREENS are action-packed?

Jim D: Ridiculous and audacious and hugely funny. And it feels like it manages to mock every stupid video game idea that’s emerged in the last ten years, while simultaneously showing how cool those ideas could have been if they were handled less stupidly. I’m in love with it.

Gay Gamer Review

Jeff Levine: To be honest, I didn’t get very far, like chapter five or so? It was one of those games where I put it down and kept meaning to go back to it, but just never did. I didn’t have any super negative reaction to it, but I guess I never felt compelled to want to play it further? It sat on the shelf unplayed for so long that I eventually realized I wasn’t going to get back into it and traded it in when I needed money for something else. I don’t think it was exactly the game’s problem, more just my changing tastes and almost complete indifference to playing through a single player, story driven game. In fact, this may have been the game that made me realize I can’t maintain enough interest in a solely single player game to justify spending $60 US on them, since I never seem interested enough to play them through to the end, no matter how highly they’re rated. The basic structure of cut-scene, fight a series of small enemies, cut-scene, boss fight, then repeat, is just a type of game that now bores me horribly.

Zero Punctuation Review

Mitch Krpata: I was embarrassed to play this game, but I was having too much fun to care.

Sexy Videogame Land

Captain Lorax: honestly, I’ve only seen people play it but I wanted to give it 5 points

Cozen: u can play it w/one hand u know

John Justen: It’s well done and I enjoy it but I don’t really see what all the fuss is about. We’ve all played Asteroids before.

Polyphonic: My favorite game of 2008. Does that mean it’s the best? Probably not. I’m sure there are bigger, better games out there to be played, but none of those that I played provided the immediate satisfaction of this game. Bizarre took everything that was great about GW1 and improved it, added five new game modes (which all are outstanding in their own ways, improved the graphics, and put all your friends’ infuriatingly high scores on the launch screen. And as with most of the best arcade-style games, this game has infinite replayability and is hard as shit. I will play this game forever.

Mitch Krpata: I got so addicted to this game that I had to uninstall it before my marriage suffered.

Critical reception

JeffLevine: Pacifism Mode + high score competition made this one for me.

JimD: Jeff has sucked the fun out of Geometry Wars 2 for me, by racking up a bunch of scores I’ll never even come close to beating, all within the first 24 hours. Seven million plus in evolved? Twelve plus in sequence?? Dude! Boo!

EZ Snappin: I waited until now to jump into FIFA, and my wait paid off in spades. Be A Pro mode as fun as anything else this year.

Developer Interview

If: If we’re just going on what I spent the most time on this year I think this might just about get it. The temptation to go online for one game and just keep playing more is immense; especially when someone keeps offering you a rematch and you just know you could beat them again. The refinements from the already impressive 09 are really noticeable. The way that the ball bounces around and deflects off players feels remarkably realistic and pulling off an awesome long ball down the wing, Arshavin chip goal from a stupid angle, or cynical foul to avoid a certain equalizer, is more satisfying than ever.

Sondrangerbot: I played this more than any other game. Lots of stupid flaws to it but the gameplay alone is close to perfection.

Cozwn: Messi plus 360 control is sublime.
