Bamcquern: jrpg less interesting for how it interrogates the limits of the form than for its atmosphere, unlicensed music and its Platonism-themed punch line

Nhex: Some people have pushed Space Funeral as the quirky horrible RPGMaker game of the year, but mostly it is just terrible

Super Crate Box is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it’s time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with interesting, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.
Bamcquern: not as good as the demo version but the basic idea of collecting as many crates as you possibly can no matter how doing so will disadvantage your position is still there

Nhex: So many Metroidvania clones, so many games that use a Game Boy aesthetic. This one, from the maker of the high quality Iji, nails it. Super tight controls, 2-bit graphics, a little bit of carefully placed atmospheric design and music – shows what it takes to outclass the masses of solid but unmemorable flash action games.

Nhex: Once again proving that Valve knows how to acquire talent, this game brought out the obsession in me for a good chunk of this year. It’s basically a co-op time attack game with very well designed levels and a pretty awful community, likely due to being free. The EXP unlock / prestige system is a little evil, but I damn well know if they ever get around to releasing new weapons or maps I’ll jump back in. It’s a shame this will probably be ignored by Valve, because the effort of design shows, it gets shockingly deep and brutal. And free!

Touching heroics in Alien Swarm

abanana: Fantastic idea; I hope Ken Grafals completes the full game.

Forksclovetofu: Damn fun. I’d love to see this mechanic gets picked up for a full length release.

Doctor Casino: I do have to say I don’t love the 3-D engine, which feels kind of incidental to the shrinking/growing gimmick… the perspective just makes it hard to figure out distances, which is always an unforgivable problem in a platformer. Beautiful concept though.

Nhex: I played A LOT of Flash games this year, even more than usual. It seemed like there was inventive, fresh stuff coming out every week in 2011 from every corner of the web. Victorian BMX was easily one of my favorites. This game had wonderful art, tight controls, addictive score chasing and an amusing, stupid metal riff that plays nonstop in the background to pump you up.
jjjusten: AWESOME

forksclovetofu: Joe Danger/Excitebike lite but good for whiling away an hour or two. Price is right!

Bamcquern: A mock punk scribbly adventure game so nihilistic that it crashes when you win.

jamescobo: I makes mah money doing social media marketing (i.e. Facebooking it up for corporate clients), so admittedly part of my infatuation with Qrank (pronounced “Crank”, not “Cue-Rank” as I stupidly called it for like five straight months) stems from constantly talking about it as a bandwagon clients need to be hopping on board with both feet. Still, as an object of game design, it’s pretty much the perfect example of how an iOS trivia game (or really even a mobile trivia game all-in) should work: the questions are always both new and pertinent (I still give props to the question-writers for throwing one in about Kevin Costner’s Gulf-cleaning doohickey literally the day after the news broke), the power-ups are helpful without being game-breaking and the location-based applications are a stroke of genius. I actually made sure my flights home for Christmas break went into as many airports as possible just so I could pick up badges for playing in those states. It’s always fun to brag about adopting early enough to actually unlock the badge for being top-10 in the world one day… now that there’s an actual userbase, I doubt that’s ever gonna happen again though.

Bamcquern: I love this tiny naked ninja series and game developer Ikiki’s work in general, and this might even have rated higher if I could get past that really high wall that requires a string of difficult moves performed in about one second with precision timing to move on.

Captain Lorax: I got to level 19 I think. It’s insane.

More flash games from the same designer, Tonypa

Estela: I love Taberinos.
